Wedding Song

“L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole is going to be our first dance at our wedding.  It’s a classic, and has that big band feel, especially towards to end, which is neat.  It’s especially neat since Patrick actually used to play the trombone.  A nice little tribute to that.

Also I noticed a lot love songs, while they sound sweet, sound so damned depressing.  This one has that celebratory nature that should be present at a wedding.

Just the thought of dancing to that with Patrick, while cruising down the Potomac river, past all the monuments, champagne flowing, etc.  It is just too perfect.

Sometimes I do find myself amused by what people choose for their first dance.  It’s as if they don’t listen to the lyrics.  The song “sounds” like a love song, so it’s in!  For example, “Beautiful” by James Blunt has become very popular.  Do they not realize that part of the song says “You’re beautiful, it’s true. I saw your face in a crowded room.  And I don’t know what to do.  I’ll never be with you.”  Yeah, that’s romantic.  That’s exactly the kind of sentiment you want to express on the day you’re pledging love and togetherness with your one and only.  Way to go.

Listen to what you choose, people.

  • That is one of my favorite love songs. I adore Nat King Cole!

  • OMG that is such a perfect first song! I love it. Very classy and appropriate and especially cruising on the Potomoc, it’s just perfect.

  • awww what a great choice! I’ve already picked mine out…too bad I don’t even have a boyfriend…*sigh*

  • My husband and I love the movie “Strictly Ballroom” and at the very end they play ‘Love is in the Air’ and everyone is dancing on the floor and just so happy that we had to do it at our wedding too. It was absolutely perfect and we had everyone out there making it so. Good luck to you and all your preparations!

  • I LOVE my first song still! No regrets. I remember we were talking to each other the whole time it was playing and we barely did much but sway and talk…we knew basically forever that it would be our song (Air “You Make it Easy”) but when we danced to it we were like, “damn this song is longer than we thought while everyone just stared at us. :-P Your wedding will be so fun. Can’t wait.

  • I sang that at my sister’s wedding!

  • That is such a fantastic song and I think it suits you guys to a “T”. Speaking of odd wedding song choices, I heard of one where they chose “Every Breath You Take” by the Police…yeah, nothing like a song about STALKING to start your marriage off with! Thanks for the well wishes and sorry I’ve been MIA lately. But your blog has always put a smile on my face :)

  • A friend of mine had Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you’!!! Ok, they’re both Swiss, but I thought she spoke English quite well. Obviously not so much…

  • Aw, I love that song, too! It’s on my nominee list for First Song. I totally get you on the fact that some people just pick the WRONG song. I, too, want ours to be celebratory and lyrics are essential. I don’t want to see them written down and realize we danced to something non-loving.

    Or effin’ James Blunt. Ew.

  • It’s super important that people read the lyrics before choosing a song as their wedding song. I wouldn’t want a song in which “I’ll never be with you” to be played while I dance with my hubby for the first time.

    Silly people :)

  • I always like “Your Song” by Elton John except for the part when he sings about her (his?) eyes. You know, when he can’t remember if they are green or blue? Dude, you’d best remember the color of my eyes!

  • Nat King Cole is always a good choice!

  • Congrats on picking a perfect song for the both of you!
I agree. People just don’t think hard enough about their choices. When the hubby and I planned the wedding we were really careful. Some so called love songs out there are terrible, and not good wedding karma at all!!
